The Hayden Island auxiliary bridge plans.
The following pages provide sustainable solutions to increase regional highway capacity, Bike and Pedestrian use routes and the direct Hayden Island access bypassing the I-5 bridge.
The HWY 217/26 extension
This is a shortcut proposal from the Sunset Transit Center to North Portland - Vancouver Transit area. This route will intersect with HWY 217/26 at the Sunset Transit area and HWY 30 to and from Portland. This route link will redirect traffic from the HWY 26 tunnel bottleneck, the I-405 and I-5 (portland downtown). This route will also divert traffic from the I-5 interstate bridge by up to 30%.
The HWY 217/26 extension tunnels have three lanes, but the center lane is reserved for emergency and commuter train use only. The tunnels will have traffic lights and speed postings as well as online cameras, (not fully illustrated in drawings at this point). The tunnel route section is closed to hazardous transports. Specific tunnel details not shown at this time.

The Hayden Island auxiliary bridge
This proposed bridge is to divert traffic away from the I-5 bridge at a lower cost and with greater benefits. His bridge will also extend the MAX line from the Expo Center to Jantzen Beach Main Stop & Center Aveue in Hayden Island.
The Rose Quarter to Gorge Greenway
This bike and pedestrian trail is to provide safe passage for bicycles and pedestrians. Resting benches and some simple shelters should be installed along the route.
The Broadway Weidler Corridor
This bikeway route will provide a safer and quieter way for zero emission bike riders.
